Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *kehä, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *kečä. Cognate with Komi kiš (kiš, circle), Eastern Mari kešä (kešä, circle), Western Mari kè₍ṭšə (kè₍ṭšə, circle), Erzya tši (tši, circle), Moksha ši (ši, circle), Eastern Khanty kö̆tš, Northern Mansi kis (circle), Udmurt kiš (kiš, circle), and Northern Sami giessât (circle). May in turn derive from Proto-Uralic, compare with Selkup koš (“circle”).
