From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kirsnos, from Proto-Indo-European *kr̥snós (black). Cognates include Lithuanian kir̃snas (black), Old Church Slavonic чрънъ (črŭnŭ, black) and Sanskrit कृष्ण (kṛṣṇá, black).
