From Old Norse klǫpp (“a pierlike rock, stepping stone in a stream”), from Proto-Germanic *klampō, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gel (“to form into a ball”). See *klumpô (“clump, mass”), Middle High German klapf (“cliff top”), English clop (“rock, mound, hillock”).
