Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *kolme toicta kümmentä. Equivalent to kolm (three) +‎ teist (of second). Shortened from kolmteistkümmend ("three of the second decade"), which is still evident in declension. Cognate with Finnish kolmetoista.
