Etymology[edit]

kommunal or kommun +‎ fullmäktig. The older form kommunalfullmäktig has been used since 1862, when the municipal reform of 1863 was drafted. SAOB (edited in 1937) doesn't list the shorter kommunfullmäktig. This adjective refers to the individual member of the assembly, with the -e being a 19th century plural inflection.
