The ultimate origin of the word is unknown. Cognates exist in Finnic languages: Estonian kõrb, Veps koŕb.

korpi

  1. A boreal forest type appearing on moist moraine soils, characterized by dense growth of spruce as the dominating tree species and deep layer of moss as undergrowth. Korpi is often a transition zone between a drier kangas -type forest and various types of suo (swamp).
  2. A deep forest.
  3. (colloquial) An area remote from dense population; backwoods, backwater.
