Finnish[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Finnic *kumpu, probably from Proto-Uralic *kumpa (“wave”), whence also Erzya кумбо (kumbo, “hummock”), Moksha комба (komba, “hump”) and Hungarian hab (“foam”). Contains a -u suffix which is not seen in the earlier derivation kumpare. The Finnic root has also been compared with Proto-Germanic *humpaz (whence English hump), possibly hinting that it is borrowed from Germanic instead.
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
kumpu
- hummock, hillock (small natural elevation of earth, generally smaller than kukkula (“hill”) and larger than kumpare (“knoll”))
- mound (small, rounded, artificial elevation of earth)
