Close to Lithuanian gungulỹs (ball), Old Norse kǫngull (bundle of berries), Ancient Greek γογγύλος (gongúlos, round), Latin conucla (staff for holding flax, wool, etc.). Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *kunkula similar to Lithuanian kunkulas, "bubble".
