Borrowed from Italian quartetto. The current pronunciation and spelling may be influenced by French quartette.

kwartet n (plural kwartetten, diminutive kwartetje n)
- A quartet, group of four.
- Especially a chamber music ensemble of four players, may be specifed after one or more of them.
- A quartette, piece of chamber music written in four parts, as for the above type of ensemble.
- A card game where players have to collect sets of four cards.
- A foursome (sex act involving four people).
