Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Baltic *led-, from Proto-Indo-European *ledʰ (ice), perhaps the same as *leidʰ (slippery, to slide). Cognates include Lithuanian lẽdas, dialectal ledùs, Old Prussian ladis, Russian лёд (ljod), Old Church Slavonic лєдъ (ledŭ), Czech led, Polish lód.[1]
