Etymology[edit]

From the same stem as the verb lemt (to decide, to resolve) (q.v.) in its old meaning, “to break.” Cognates include Lithuanian lẽmežis, Russian лемех (lémex, plowshare), Czech lemes, Polish lemiesz.[1]
