Etymology[edit]

Probably from Proto-Indo-European *luhxeh₂, through a Proto-Tocharian root *luwā-. Compare Tocharian A lu. May be distantly related to Old Church Slavonic lovъ ("chase"), compare Serbian lõv ("chase; game animal"); compare also Greek λέων (léōn).
