Etymology[edit]

A compound of m'neto (supernatural being), from Proto-Algonquian *maneto·wa (supernatural being), and kwe' (woman), from Proto-Algonquian *eɬkwe·wa ((young) woman), because such people were considered to have supernatural (spiritual) power and wisdom.
