From Proto-Germanic *malmaz. Cognate to Gothic 𐌼𐌰𐌻𐌼𐌰 (malma, sand), English malm. Also cognate to German Mulm and Dutch molm which are derived from Proto-Germanic *mulmaz, which has zero-grade ablaut.
