Etymology[edit]
From Ancient Greek μεγάλος (megálos, “big”) + ὀδών (odṓn, “tooth”); coined (as a specific epithet) by Swiss scientist Louis Agassiz in 1843; equivalent to megalo- + -don.

- A species of extinct shark that lived during the Miocene and Pliocene epochs (†Otodus megalodon).
