Etymology[edit]

Mendel +‎ -ize, from Gregor Mendel, an Austro-Hungarian priest and scientist, who gained posthumous fame as the figurehead of the new science of genetics. Mendel showed that the inheritance of certain traits follows particular laws, which were later named after him.
