From mercy + seat, after German Gnadenstuhl, translating Hebrew כַּפֹּרֶת (kappóreth) (= Hellenistic Greek ἱλαστήριον (ἱlastírion) (Septuagint)/Latin propitiatorium (Vulgate)).
