metaphorical extension (plural metaphorical extensions)

(linguistics) The process or event by which the meaning that a word has gained when used in a metaphorical phrase becomes one of the accepted meanings of the word in its standalone use outside of the phrase, as happened, for example, when the word "mouse" started to be used alone to refer to computer mouse.
