From moanne, ‘moon’, and dei, ‘day’, (Old Frisian mōnadei < late Proto-Germanic *mēniniz dagaz), a calque of Latin dies Lunae, “day of the moon”. Compare English Monday, Dutch maandag, German Montag, Danish mandag.
