Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Probably of Slavic origin, compare Proto-Slavic *mogyla (sepulchral cairn), or a creative expression based on a root moc-. The word found in Slavic languages seems itself to be of foreign origin. It has been attempted to link it to a Gepid word, but this is unlikely. Compare also Albanian gamulë, and Romanian măgură.
