Etymology[edit]

Probably from Vulgar Latin *mut(i)la, from *mutilus, alteration of Latin mutulus. Another alternative may be ultimately from cumulus, possibly crossed with mutulus or transposed into a form *muc(u)lus, and changed to feminine gender. Compare Italian mucchio.
