From myö- (rear, beyond) +‎ -s, from Proto-Finnic *möö-, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *müŋä (rear, beyond). Cognate with Erzya мей (mej, reverse (side)), мейле (mejľe, later). For a similar semantic development, see Hungarian meg (and, plus).
