Finnish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Literally "until we see/meet again"; the illative plural of the 3rd infinitive näkemä- of nähdä (to see); thus, more literally, "to seeings", "until seeings"; compare Swedish på återseende, German auf Wiedersehen, French au revoir, Italian arrivederci.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈnækemiːn/, [ˈnæk̟e̞miːn]
  • Audio:(file)
  • Rhymes: -ækemiːn
  • Syllabification(key): nä‧ke‧miin

Interjection[edit]

näkemiin

  1. see you later, see you, goodbye
Synonyms: nähdään, (informal) näkemisiin, (informal, humoristic) näkyillään, näkymisiin, vi sees, (dialectal) nähellään

Usage notes[edit]

näkemiin is somewhat more formal than nähdään. näkemisiin is decidedly informal, as are the other synonyms listed above.
