Finnish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From neiti. Cognates include Karelian neitšyt, Veps neitšud, Votic neitsüd (daughter-in-law, fiancée), Estonian neitsi, and Livonian neitst.[1]

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): [ˈneit̪syt̪]
  • Hyphenation: neit‧syt

Noun[edit]

neitsyt

  1. A virgin.

Declension[edit]

In spoken language, the genitive singular can be neitsyeen and the illative singular neitsyeeseen – these forms still are proscribed. This confusion is due to the similarity of the nouns ending in -ue and -ye, joukkue, "team" > illative singular joukkueeseen, yhtye, "band" > illative singular yhtyeeseen.
