[edit] Etymology
Origin uncertain: perhaps an alteration of newie with intrusive B (compare freebie), perhaps a shortening of new boy or new beginner. Very likely originated in Newfoundland, where the term 'new boy' is quite common, and sounds like 'newbie' when spoken.
