Usage notes[edit]
Before the spelling reform of 1998, an adjectival participle could be negated with this prefix only when used as an adjective, e.g. niepijący (“teetotal”), as opposed to being used as a participle, e.g. nie pijący (“not drinking (at the time)”), in which case it should use a standalone nie. The reform permitted attaching nie to the participle in both cases. [1]
