Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Middle High German abcede,[1] [2] from the first letters of the latin alphabet, a, b, c in a fashion similar to English alphabet and Russian азбука (azbuka); from Latin abecedarium + -dło.[3] First attested in c. 1440.
