Dutch[edit]

Prepositional phrase[edit]

op zijn plaats

  1. in place (at the place where something belongs)
Alle stukjes van de puzzel zijn nu op hun plaats.
All the pieces of the puzzle are now in place.

Adjective[edit]

op zijn plaats (used only predicatively, comparative meer op zijn plaats, superlative meest op zijn plaats)

  1. appropriate, fitting, in order
Nadat ik zo hard gewerkt heb, is een beloning wel op zijn plaats, lijkt mij.
After I worked so hard, a reward is in order, I would say.

Usage notes[edit]

Used as the predicate of a plural subject, the possessive pronoun zijn may or may not follow in number. So excuses zijn op hun plaats and excuses zijn op zijn plaats (apologies are in order) are both acceptable.
