passieren (third-person singular simple present passiert, past tense passierte, past participle passiert, auxiliary haben or sein)

  1. (auxiliary sein) to happen
    Wie konnte das nur passieren?
    How could that have happened?
  2. (formal, auxiliary haben) to move beyond; pass
    Die Gruppe hat soeben die Grenze passiert.
    The group has just passed the border.
  3. (cooking, auxiliary haben) to pass through a sieve, to strain
    Als nächstes muss die Brühe durch das Sieb passiert werden.
    Next, the broth needs to be passed through the sieve.

Usage notes[edit]

In most regions, passieren is the normal word for “to happen” whereas geschehen is rather formal.
