From Vulgar Latin *perdonare, from per- + donare, a loan-translation of a Germanic word represented by Frankish *firgeban (to forgive, give up completely), from fir- + geban. Akin to Old High German fargeban, firgeban (to forgive), Old English forġiefan (to forgive). More at forgive.
