Pronunciation[edit]

Adjective[edit]

peritoneal (not comparable)

  1. Of, relating to, or affecting the peritoneum.
    • 1914, Transactions of the Section on Genito-Urinary Diseases of the American Medical Association, page 80:
After opening the bladder (incision extending 1 inch pubically from peritoneal fold) the prostate was was injected deeply with 1 per cent. cocain while the pericapsular region was injected with the 1 : 400 novocain solution.

Usage notes[edit]

Do not confuse peritoneal (which concerns certain things inside the abdomen) with peroneal (which concerns the lower leg) nor with perineal (which concerns the skin between the genitals and anus); the words can sound somewhat similar, especially in rapid speech such as a doctor's dictation.
