From Latin pulmō, pulmōnem, probably through metathesis from a root *plumonem (compare Sicilian primuni, Sardinian primone), or less likely from Greek πλεμόνι (plemóni). Compare Aromanian pãlmunã. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *pléu-mon-.
