Etymology[edit]

Blend of portable +‎ filter, or possibly incompletely calqued from Italian Italian portafiltro "filter-carrier".

Noun[edit]

portafilter (plural portafilters)

  1. A holder for ground espresso coffee that is attached to a group in an espresso machine to produce espresso.
  2. A similar-shaped device but without a bottom opening, used to backflush or clean an espresso machine.
