From French profil (“‘a progile’”) < Italian profilo (“‘a border’”), later also proffilo (“‘a side-face, profile’”) < pro- < Latin pro (“‘before’”) + filo (“‘a line, stroke, thread’”) < Latin filum (“‘a thread’”); see file.
