Either from feminine of pucios, from puți or from a Vulgar Latin root *puteōsa, from Latin puteō. Compare Italian puzzoso. Cf. also the name of the Italian city Pozzuoli, from the Latin name Puteoli, referring to the sulfuric smell in the area.
