Uncertain. The Classical Nahuatl term for pulque was octli, or specifically iztac octli (white pulque). Pulque may be a Spanish derivation of Classical Nahuatl poliuhqui octli (spoiled pulque, spoiled wine), from poliuhqui (something lost).
