From older *klêsh, from Proto-Indo-European *klek-, *kleg- (to shout). Cognate to Ancient Greek κλώσσω (klṓssō, I cluck), Old Church Slavonic клекотъ (klekotŭ, laughter, noise), Latin clangō (scream, sound), Old English hlehhan (to laugh).
