From Proto-Tocharian *rŭtäre, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rudʰros, whence Sanskrit रुधिर (rudhirá), Ancient Greek ἐρυθρός (eruthrós), Latin ruber, and English red from a variant form. Ultimately from the root *h₁rewdʰ-. Compare Tocharian A rtär.
