Etymology[edit]
Uncertain; suggested to be either borrowed from Frankish *hriubisk, from *hreub (“rough”) + *-isk,[1] or cognate with Italian rivescio, riverscio (“reversed”),[2] from Vulgar Latin *reversiciō, from *reversicāre (whence Italian rivesciare, rovesciare (“to reverse, turn over”)), from Latin reversus (“turned around”).
