German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Latin recēns.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ʁeˈt͡sɛnt/
  • Hyphenation: re‧zent
  • (file)

Adjective[edit]

rezent (strong nominative masculine singular rezenter, comparative rezenter, superlative am rezentesten)

  1. (literary) recent; of or from a time not long ago
    Synonyms: zeitgenössisch, aktuell, kürzlich
  2. (biology) extant
  3. (regional, Switzerland, of food) savoury
    Synonym: pikant

Usage notes[edit]

  • (recent): The normal German word for “recent, recently” is kürzlich, but this can only be used as an adjective with events: die kürzlichen Erfolge (the recent successes). Therefore rezent may be used with things: ein rezentes Lehnwort (a recent loanword). Outside of literary style, it is preferable to use kürzlich with some participle: ein kürzlich aufgenommenes Lehnwort (a recently adopted loanword).
