From Proto-Germanic *rīdanan, from Proto-Indo-European *reidh-. Cognate with Old Saxon rīdan (Dutch rijden), Old High German rītan (German reiten), Old Norse ríða (Icelandic ríða and Swedish rida). The Proto-Indo-European root is also the source of Old Irish ríadaim (Welsh rhwyddhau).
