From Proto-Germanic *rīdaną, from Proto-Indo-European *reydʰ-. Cognate with Old Saxon rīdan (Low German rieden), Old Dutch rīdan (Dutch rijden), Old High German rītan (German reiten), Old Norse ríða (Icelandic ríða, Danis ride, Swedish rida). The Proto-Indo-European root is also the source of Old Irish ríadaim, Welsh rhwyddhau.
