From Proto-Germanic *ridanan from Proto-Indo-European *reidh-. Cognate with Old Saxon rīdan (Dutch rijden), Old High German rītan (German reiten), Old Norse ríða (Icelandic ríða and Swedish rida). The PIE root is also the source of Old Irish ríadaim (Welsh rhwyddhau).
