Etymology[edit]

From Middle Dutch riten, from Old Dutch *rītan, from Proto-Germanic *hrītaną. Cognate with Old Saxon hrītan, Old Swedish hrīta, and with s-mobile also dialectal German schrissen, schreissen, Gothic 𐌳𐌹𐍃𐍃𐌺𐍂𐌴𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (disskreitan). Possibly also cognate with Old English wrītan (English write), Old Saxon wrītan, Old High German rīzan (German reißen), Old Norse ríta (Norwegian rita). Compare also Old Armenian գիր (gir).
