From Old Albanian (Tosk) *roça, from Proto-Albanian *(a)nātjā, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enh₂ti (compare Ancient Greek νῆσσα (nêssa), νῆττα (nêtta), Lithuanian ántis, Dutch eend). Cf. also Slovene raca, Romanian rață.
