rune (“rune”) + dansk (“Danish”), with reference to the fact that the language was written in runes.

- Runic Danish; Old East Norse dialect (sometimes considered a language separate from Old Norse, Old East Scandinavian and few other designations are also used) of the Danish runestones. According to different definitions Old Danish is considered either a synonymous term or a descendant of the Runic Danish
