Etymology 1[edit]

From Proto-Uralic *śäŋe ( ~ *śäkV, *śäɣV, *śäwV - if Finn. does not belong). Baltic-Finnic cognates of the same meaning are deemed certain and include eg. Karelian seä, Votic sää, Veps . Probably inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *säŋi (air), also reflected in Hungarian ég (sky) and Komi-Zyrian сынӧд (synöd, warm air).
