Faroese[edit]

súrepli

Etymology[edit]

From súrur (sour) +‎ epli, a word that originally meant apple (and still retains that sense in biblical and poetical context), but which has now become the common term for potato (otherwise termed jørðepli), hence the need to differentiate the meaning of “apple”.

Pronunciation[edit]
