From Gothic *𐍃𐌰𐌼𐌱𐌰𐍄𐍉 (*sambatō), an alteration (possibly dialectal, via Byzantine Greek *σάμβατον (*sámbaton, Sabbath)) of earlier, biblical 𐍃𐌰𐌱𐌱𐌰𐍄𐍉 (sabbatō), from Koine Greek σάββατον (sábbaton), from Hebrew שבת (shabát), possibly from Akkadian 𒊭𒉺𒀜𒌈 (šapattum, the middle day of the month). Equivalent to sambaz +‎ tag.
