Etymology[edit]

Related to the words samur (the same) + sæti (seat, position, place), because the different isotopes of a chemical element always occupy the same position in the periodic table of elements. A calque of the English isotope from the Greek ίσος (iso-, "equal", "same") and τόπος ("place").
