From Vulgar Latin *excappāre or *excapāre, present active infinitives of *excappō, *excapō, from Latin ex- + cappa (cloak). Compare Aromanian scap, scãpare, Italian scappare, French échapper, Spanish, Catalan, and Occitan escapar, Romansch scappar.
