From Middle Dutch schiten, from Old Dutch *skītan, from Proto-Germanic *skītaną, from Proto-Indo-European *skeyd, *sḱeyd- (to part with, separate, cut off). Cognate with Low German schieten, German scheißen, English shit, shite, West Frisian skite, Danish skide.
